Apologies for the long post ahead…
These are just some quick thoughts on yesterday’s big announcement that Amazon wants to get into the fanfic business. I’m not a fanfic author, but I’m a fan artist and so my concerns and hopes are probably the same as yours. This is relevant to fan art as well……
Fan Culture exists because fans do not WANT to be under any corporate control. Even with Fringenuity we were nervous about teaming up with FOX. I can tell you a good story about how WB and FOX treated those who organized the Fringe Event convention in Vancouver. Short lesson: They don’t want you to play unless it’s with their rules. Even if you play by the rules, they scoff at you.
You can see how major networks try to direct fan activity now. They take everything fans have done on their own and use it. Memes? Custom hashtags? Fan art? These have long been entrenched in fan communities, and the corps are trying to control them.
The fans have promoted shows better than their paid employees in many cases.
I hope that the small and tight-knit Fringe fanfic community avoids this like the plague if it expands to our world.
Amazon: Destroyer of fanfic worlds.
It may get to a point where fans will have to have informal conventions and exchange real fan fiction and art in person or by mail again. -_-
